It is quite easy to decorate spacious rooms as there, the only limit is the fantasy. But to decorate a small space so it would be comfortable? It is a much more difficult task. "Home Idea with IKEA" visits a family of six and the room awaiting makeover is a bedroom for the smallest of three children and his mother. IKEA Interior Designer Kristīne already mastered a small space challenge in the last season and is not afraid to wage it again!
Where there is some, there is always more
Have you ever noticed how things seem to become more and more all by themselves? It's really true! Sometimes, when there are is already a lot of stuff in a room it seems like a lost effort to try and get rid of that. This room has ar story similar to that. On the one hand, there is not enough space in the wardrobe for all the clothing. On the other hand, there are many things that have not been touched for years.
Like morning like evening
During the day life mostly happens elsewhere, but in the evening this room becomes a hub of activity. Then, furniture has to be moved to put the small one to bed and the older children get attracted by the activity. Sometimes, the family watches television together. In the morning, the room has to be rearranged again to access the cabinets and the window.
A bedroom or a child's room?
The youngest of the three children still sleeps in one room with his mother, so a place for a smaller bed had to be found too. There was no other place to put it than right in the middle of the room so the space shrunk even more. In the evening, before going to bed, everybody has to think twice about what is needed – after making the beds, it is not possible anymore to get to anything.
More colour, more order
Even before the makeover our host Kristīne said she would not mind colours. As the room is quite small, colours have to be used with care as there is some risk for it to feel too chaotic. IKEA interior designer has chosen light furniture as background and created colourful accents with textile. Even Kristīnes favourite colour yellow has made it into the interior, emphasized by some gray-blue nuances. The sofa bed is a super versatile solution as it can be used both as a bed and as a sofa. For the backside, the designer has used a clever solution by hanging some pillows from a kitchen rail.
Every little space put to use
In small rooms, the available space has to be maximised. Here, there is an unexpected surprise right behind the curtain – a table and a chair for when guests arrive or for enjoying a nice cup of coffee. Taking almost no space at all when not in use, this furniture is right there when needed!
A wall or not a wall?
Even though the child living in this room is still small, some thought to creating privacy has to be given. The designer has created an improvised wall out of a curtain and behind it, there is a bed, a clothes rack and some shelves for books and toys. The space is small but ensures privacy accented by the wall painting.
A child's room without a room
Everybody needs some privacy from time to time, even the smallest family members. If the child does not have a separate room, it is worth to decorate at least a corner where only his things are kept and where the interior is fit for a child, both playful and encouraging for doing things themselves.
The beauty of functionality
There are not many materials that look as good as natural wood. It brings a sense of natural cosiness here too. One often sees that the space above the bed is not used, but it is actually great for some storage combinations. Boxes and baskets can be added to keep everything in order with ease.
First things first
By one wall, there is a spacious storage combination almost to the ceiling. The colour creates a neutral background for accents and has a sustainable paper foil finish that can be painted any colour you like. By adding inner details and organisers, a wardrobe like this can become a storage champion.
Saving space the easy way
Sofa beds are good for small rooms as they help to use space efficiently. Small when not in use, they are comfortable and cosy for sleeping. Under the bed, there is even more storage space in drawers.
