This weeks adventure is the transformation of a tiny bedroom in the home of a new family: parents Santa un Ilmārs, their baby boy Frederiks and Bonny, the cat. The room needed a professional touch in making it a relaxing hideaway and a love nest for the parents only. IKEA interior designer Renāte is up for the challenge of a cosy very-small-space-living.
Most romantic room in the making
The main heroes of this week's show had a clear idea of what they were looking for. They dreamed of a romantic bedroom for just two of them, preferably, in dark colours, with a hint of dark crimson. They were hoping for a room, which is more than just a place for sleeping. They imagined a room for cosy snuggles, a calm and neat place for laying back, relaxing after a busy day, recharging and reviving the spark.
Daily feeling of unpacking
Finding an appropriate and stylish storage solution for all their stuff seemed a far-fetched wish for such a small room. Yet there must be some way around this, so that clothes could finally be unpacked from the boxes and hidden behind some doors, in order to hide it from the dust and get rid of the cluttered sight, making this room cosy and intimate.
Interior designer Renāte
My name is Renāte. When it comes to interior design, I like the element of surprise – arriving at solutions that client never could have imagined. I love working with textiles and combining different textures and colours. I feel excited about a chance to transform a space in a beautiful, homely and functional room, thus making someone's life at least a little bit better.
Love is in the air
The central peace of the transformed bedroom is the MALM bed. Dark colours are not a typical choice for a bedroom, yet the interior designer showed the magic powers with textiles. The dark MAJGULL and ANNAKAJSA curtains are in many layers, which allows playing with a natural daylight to suit the mood – from see-through to completely light-blocking. Dark bed linen gives the intimate feeling, as does the carpet and pillows – lots and lots of pillows.
Hideaway under the bed
The room is too small for the ordinary solution with storage drawers on the sides of the bed – opening the drawers there would be no space for your feet. The smart choice in such cases is the MALM high bed frame with a spacious storage underneath, which is accessible by simply lifting up the base of the bed. There is enough space even for large items, such as ironing board or snowboard. Complete the storage with boxes, bags and other organisers, such as STUK, SKUBB and STORSTABBE. Headboard gives the needed support for sitting up comfortably in the bed while reading.
Store your clothes discretely
Closed PAX wardrobe helps maintaining a harmonious and tidy look in the room. If there is a wall, there is a place also for a wardrobe – save the space with the sliding doors. LED lighting strip in the wardrobe turns on automatically and it gives just the necessary light to find your clothes, but not too much to wake up the other person. The high MALM chest of drawers with a hidden mirror in the top cover is a compact substitute for a dressing table.
Romantic textiles
Textiles and calm, diversified lighting can turn any space in a warm snug. The dark colours preferred by the hosts are covered in details – SANELA cotton velvet cushion covers, pleated VÄGMÅLLA throw and VÅRELD bedspread, FILODENDRON quilt cover, curtains and the dark grey STOENSE low-pile rug, as well as picture frames and other accessories. Instantly visible are tree types of lighting: a modest ALÄNG ceiling lamp for general lighting, HEKTAR wall spotlight for reading and LAMPAN table lamp for a romantic late night light.
Small-space bedroom
You were a witness of a true interior design magic happening right in front of your eyes. This charming boudoir has everything a proper parent's bedroom needs – functionality, intimate atmosphere and romantic hosts to enjoy all that.
