An island of peace in a bustling city

A new season and many new interior adventures with "Home idea with IKEA". Kicking off the new season there is a story about many a city dwellers dream: a peaceful garden house in the heart of the city. Oskars and Kristīne have made themselves and their family a spot for relaxation in Lucavsala, the historic vegetable-patch district in Riga. Luscious green and inviting, it now lures many busy young families to spend some time closer to nature.

Self made interior on a shoestring

The small garden house was put together by Oskars himself, and the budget for the interior was set to as low as possible, so there are many creative solutions, mostly using wooden pallets. However, there is no overall concept and everything is just stuck together creating an impression of a temporary solution. Kristīne admits, that she is always torn between the wish to work on improvements and to just relax.

Budget solutions for spending the night in the garden

IKEA Interior Designer Agita has tackled one of the biggest challenges in this small space: the creation of a comfortable and easy-to-use sleeping solution for the whole family. In small spaces, where one room serves as the living, cooking and storage area, it is best to choose flexible solutions, like daybeds that double as sofas and light beds for children. Here, Agita has chosen a stackable wooden bed that is easily converted in two single beds or even a sofa.
 

Multifunctionality as the best friend of small spaces

The smaller the space, the more flexibility is required. In this minute garden house, multifunctionality is key. IVAR series is the perfect choice as it offers many possibilities to combine, add and personalize and is made of beautiful natural wood that is a great choice for creating a relaxed country feel. Agita has chosen to combine open and closed shelves and add a drop-leaf table that is another clever addition to this room as it allows to free up the space when it is tome to extend the beds and go to sleep.
 

The magic is in the details

After finishing the furniture planning it is time to add details. Interior accessories like vases, lights, pictures and other decorative elements are the ones that can make a simple and functional interior a reflexion of one's personality and add a great deal to the cosiness of the whole. Decorations are also the easiest way to change the atmosphere in a room: just move them around or add new details and the room will change as if by magic!
 

Time to play alone and together

Families with children sometimes struggle with the clear zoning of their spaces, as the toys seem to take over just everything! To prevent this, Agita has put up a shelf designed for toys and games. A separate shelf can work wonders in that it is easier for children to remember where to look for their things and also easier to put them away.
 

Extending the living space

Summer houses often have a terrace that is a great way to add more space for relaxing on warm days. Here, Designer Agita has converted the terrace into an outdoor area for eating, playing games and just relaxing. The solution fits perfectly with the whole as it is light, flexible and easy to store away when not needed. The right accessories can convert it into a romantic spot for two or a dining area for the whole family.
 

Take the cosiness outside

Sometimes, we are so overwhelmed with planning the interior of rooms that we forget about creating cosiness outside, too. It is easy to create the right atmosphere with lanterns, some green plants and other elements that will make the terrace feel like home.
