Sustainable life at home
At IKEA we have loads of money-saving products and solutions to help you save energy and water, and reduce waste. They may seem like small things – but that’s the beauty of small actions: they all add up!
Since 2016, all the lighting that we sell is LED. LED bulbs use 85% less energy and lasts 25 times longer than incandescent ones. Small light bulbs bring enormous environmental benefits.
We are deeply grateful to Thomas Edison for incandescent light bulbs, but to be honest, these have too little benefit. They last too short and consume lots of energy to produce 75% of heat and only 25% of light.
So we are ready to move forward. And have more important things to do than replacing light bulbs. For example, to look for the new better ways to save natural recources and the whole planet.Light Emitting Diodes have been around since the 1960s. They’re in traffic signals, airport information signs, and the break lights of cars. An evolution in lighting has made it possible to bring LED lighting into homes. And that's great news because of the positive environmental and low energy consumption benefits.
Many of our LED lamps have the bulbs built right in. That means you never have to replace a single bulb. And with a lifetime of approximately 20 years, your children will leave home before the lamps do.
LED consumes up to 80 percent less energy than traditional (incandescent) lighting and lasts more than 20 times longer than traditional bulbs. With a lifetime of approximately 15 years there is no need to frequently change bulbs – built-in LED can even last twice as long. LED is also mercury-free. Big difference for a brighter future.
Introducing the IKEA RYET LED bulb that consumes approximately 85% less energy and lasts 15 times longer. So you won’t just save on your energy bill and reduce waste, you’ll spend less time changing bulbs too!
It was IKEA founder Ingvar Kamprad himself who posed the challenge to the product development team to find a way to lower the price of LED bulbs without compromising on quality or how long they last. And the team managed to reach the incredible low price of 0.99 EUR.Lighting makes our homes safer, cosier and more welcoming. And it allows us to do things we couldn’t otherwise do. But around a quarter of the world’s energy consumption is used for lighting. That’s a lot of energy.
We want to help you reduce your energy consumption without making sacrifices. To make living a sustainable life at home easier, beautiful and more affordable. Thanks to small size, LED opens a lot of new design opportunities. The light quality of LED bulb is so good that you can have both functional and atmospheric lighting with just one light. So, using LED not only makes life at home more sustainable but more beautiful too.
Our energy-saving appliances like induction hobs, fridges, freezers and washing machines can help make a positive difference to the environment and help lower your energy bills. We’re offering more of these products at a low price so that as many people as possible can afford them, save money and preserve our nature.
Replacing a refrigerator or freezer with a new, energy-efficient model saves money and energy. A new fridge that has been “A++ rated” in Europe can use 40% less energy than a A- or B-class fridge. But you shouldn’t have to pay more to save energy. So we made our entire range of fridges and freezers A+ and A++ rated in Europe, and sell them at low prices.
What’s the magic behind induction technology? It’s basically a magnetic field technology that only heats the pan – not the hob or surrounding air – so only a small amount of heat is wasted. Two liters of water can be brought to boil in just five minutes, which means two times faster than on a glass-ceramic hob.
How to save energy at home? Since many homes lose heat through the floors, area rugs are the unsung heroes of low-cost, quick-fix energy solutions.
You can also save energy and regulate indoor temperatures by using curtains. They block the hot sun during summer and saves the heat during winter.
Experts say that less than three percent of the water on Earth is fresh water. We can all contribute to conserving this precious, shared resource. That’s why we offer kitchen taps that reduce water consumption by up to 30%, bathroom taps that reduce consumption up to 50%. Many IKEA dishwashers and washing machines also help saving water.
