This time, "Home idea with IKEA" visits a true one room wonder in Bolderāja. Daidze and Maksims call this small apartment home for nine years already and they live here together with their young son Jury. The close-knit trio has applied for a makeover in hope to bring some clarity in their furniture chaos, where nothing seems to fulfil the purpose and function originally intended.

When needs meet possibilities
Daidze admits that the main issue in this room is storage. Things are stored just about everywhere. In the big wardrobe, in drawers of the high bed... At the same time, there is also the challenge of planning everything so that the room could be used as a living room, a bedroom and kid's room. A sore point is the nice desk under the high bed that cannot be really used because of the unfortunate placement of the sofa.

Clever storage is half success
When first visiting the one room apartment, Designer Olga immediately noticed an aspect which is a blessing in terms of lighting the room and a curse in terms of temperatures in summer. The apartment faces south and while nice and sunny, it also gets scorching hot in here on warm summer days. Therefore, blackout curtains were a must. They block the light coming from the window, enhancing the quality of sleep and also prevent overheating. A whole storage combination at ceiling level is a clever way of using the height of the walls to clear more floor area. Choosing light fronts it shall not create too heavy an impression and adds character to the room by harmonising with same colour elements on a lower level.

How to avoid monotony of a storage wall
At least one spacious wardrobe is a must in a family. It can be used both for clothing and other things and helps to maintain better order. The only hitch – spacious often means massive so a good sense for proportions is needed to combine different fronts in a way that they create an impression of lightness and break up the monotony. Here, Interior Designer Olga has created a mirrored surface in the middle of the front side of the wardrobe that reflects light and enhances perspective, making the room look bigger. Open shelves beside the wardrobe loosen up the visuality of the whole storage combination.

One sofa, three possibilities
In a one room apartment for a whole family a sofa is one of the most important pieces of furniture and it has to be chosen with care. A sofa-bed is highly functional as it can be used in several ways. Add a coffee table and you have a corner for inviting some guests over. Take the table away and win some floor space for doing puzzles. Pull the sofa out and get a great sleeping comfort at night. Functionality at its finest!

Interior Designer Olga
This is the first time that IKEA Interior Designer Olga takes part in the TV show "Home idea with IKEA". And already, she is faced with a challenge of fitting many functions in one room. To her, the harmony of an interior is created by clever organisation.

Using every angle
Interior Designer Olga stresses the importance of multifunctionality. She advises using high beds for rooms with several functions when there is lack of space, like here for a place to learn and to work. The space beneath a high bed can be used to create a personalised nook where you can feel on your own. As children grow, it is essential to ensure them at least a small corner where they can be by themselves and high beds are great for that too as they create space which is not seen from the floor level. Here, the solution is complete with an individual wardrobe marking the area designed for young Jury. On the other side of the room, there is a work station for parents in matching colour. A space-saving desk and functional set of drawers right there within hands reach provides the essentials needed for working from home.

The art of illusion
Under a bed that is so much more than meets the eye, Juris now has his own place to learn and to be on himself when he wishes to. By careful use of the wall space enough place for storage has been created with pegboard combinations. Spacious shelves and drawers can hold books and school supplies with ease.
