When sports is life

Sports season with "Home idea with IKEA"! In the 5th episode a makeover is planeed in a children's room. But not just any children's room – a room for two passionate aspiring basketball players. Brothers Nikolass and Lorenss are true fans of the game. The 13 and 10 year old boys are dreaming about a sports-themed interior where they could live their passion for ball sports, learn and relax.

Cheerful but cramped

The room both boys share is light and functional, but the interior is already outdated. There is only one desk for both and even that is partly broken. Same goes for wardrobe which is particularly annoying in the morning when speed matters most. Brothers admit that their room is quite cramped and that they lack space for displaying their medals and cups.

When small sports enthusiasts meet big sports enthusiasts

IKEA Interior Designer Linda has a surprise for Nikolass un Lorenss – a meeting with two TV personalities: Kaspars Dvinskis and Toms Prāmnieks, who moderate sports news on TV. After a cosy chat and a friendly basketball game the first ideas for the new interior are born.

Visiting the Designer on her turf

After the first inspirations at the TV studio Nikolass and Lorenss visit Linda at IKEA and create a mood board for setting the atmosphere they aim to achieve. The colour scheme seems to be clear: boys like orange as that is the colour of basketball, and yellow and purple, that are the colours of their favourite team, Los Angeles Lakers.

New colours for a new life

The renovated room is a festival of contrasts: bright, sunny yellow boldly opposes the deeper purple below and is accented by the black-white-grey scheme in storage solution, bed and curtains. One wall is dedicated to a storage & work hub with a desk for two and some storage for things that have to be close at hand.

Storage, storage...

The main storage solution in this room is undoubtedly the big wardrobe in its own niche. However, some small-scale storage is also needed by the desk as there is otherwise almost no space for items needed frequently, e. g. for learning. Open cabinets are combined with ones that have door – for things that create clutter and are thus better kept hidden.

Sleeping solution for a small room

In a shared room, one of the biggest challenges is always the planning of sleeping arrangements as beds always take up a lot of space. Here, the Interior Designer has chosen a bunk bed that only takes the floor space of one bed but offers two full size sleeping spaces. At the same time, it provides a sense of privacy much needed in a room where you can never really be alone.

In sports or in life: speed is crucial

For the wardrobe, Linda chose to use curtains instead of doors, as the boys admitted the biggest issue with the old wardrobe was its doors that were almost broken and had to be pushed and pulled around a lot to use them. This could cause a lot of frustration in the morning, as brothers tried to get dressed quickly.

An own hall of fame

Designer has thought a great deal about the best way to exhibit the different trophies the brothers have collected over time and found a clever solution – using spice racks upside down! This way, medals can be displayed hanging and the cups put on the shelf above. Such a solution can be added to over time if needed.

"There is more than one way to look at different interior elements! In this room, I used spice racks for displaying boy's trophies. As the racks are made of natural wood, they can be painted in any colour. Here, I matched them to the purple wall. Children's rooms are really the ones where you should not be afraid of bold solutions."
