When creativity is everything image 1
In the artsy neighbourhood of Āgenskalns in Riga, live Signe Folka and Edgars Folks. They are a couple of artists who have found both their hobby and their profession in art. Their daughter Elīza was the one who applied for the IKEA makeover as she feels that her father's studio is in dire need of professional help. Before, her father had a separate studio elsewhere but had to give that one up. Since then, in this room, once his daughter's bedroom turned storage room, there was always also a tiny corner for work. Elisa is 100 % sure her father needs a room to call really his. That's some creative makeover Barba is in for!

When the chaos takes the upper hand
One of the first issues Elīza mentions in the application is storage. Or rather, its absence. There are several pieces of furniture designed for storage yet they fail to fulfill their function properly. The big armoire is stuffed to the limit and it is almost impossible to get anything without risking to get hit by something else that just falls out. The open shelves are not great for storing the owner's beloved books. In this room, Signe's things are also stored, making it even more cramped.

Charming in lilac
Dark lilac is one of Edgars favourite colours and Barba has decided to use it as background in this room. She has chosen a cool, inconspicious nuance that is expressive without being obtrusive. The lighting of the room has been well thought out – this was important as Edgars often works until very late. The general lighting at the ceiling is complemented by work lamps on the desk and in the reading nook behind the desk. Some extra lighting is added at the top of the storage combination as a help to see the things inside and also as a way to enhance the look of the things on the shelves.

When dreams come true
The spacious storage combination Barba has created at the far wall is a dream come true. After a long time manouvering between heaps and piles of incredible amount of stuff and worrying about the state of precious books loosing colour in the direct light, Edgars can finally feel truly at home in his studio. The storage solution is symetric by design but not dull as it combines both open and closed shelves and glass doors for protecting memorabilia and other things that can be exposed with pride.

Where the imagination can roam freely
In this haven of creative work, a spatious desk was a must. It has been left almost free for working on bigger pieces, there is nothing standing in the way of creativity. The clean lines of the desk work as a background for the ancient chair that has been renovated by IKEA carpenters to give it a second life. Art supplies have found their place in the trolley beside the desk – always handy, never a chaos on the desk.

Tips & tricks for funcional interior
Interior Designer Barba has been careful to add details that make the room cosier and more functional. In the lower part of the storage combination there is a set of nest tables that can be pulled out when needed and the lower one has a shelf for additional storage. Boxes have been added for smaller things that tend to create a cluttered impression and collect dust. For a more varied look, different boxes have been chosen.

A trolley to the rescue
A trolley is always a great option for studios, as all the supplies can be put close at hand. Add some magnetic boxes for small things and you're all set!

A special shelf for a special purpose
A special feature in this room is a shelf for storing paintings. Over time, quite a lot of works have been collected and they have to be stored in a way that they wouldn't be damaged. A solution has been found by attacing some handles to a simple shelf and thus creating something similar to bookends that do not let the paintings slip. Bye, bye chaos! The higher shelves are good for things used seldom and can be reached, using the stepping stool.
