Many homes have just one children's room, and it can be a real challenge to make it comfortable for multiple children. In this home, the mother is ready to give her sons the largest room, yet even the interior designer must carefully consider how to create a layout that meets the needs of boys at different stages. How can everyone have a bit of personal space and the chance for solitude, even within a limited area?

Before

The transformation is happening in the room that was once the boys’ mother’s bedroom. Since this space is larger, it’s been chosen as the new children's room, as the existing one feels far too cramped. Although the room is in good condition, it lacks the color and vibrancy one would expect in a children’s space - a change that’s central to this makeover.

After

What was once a simple, neutral room has been transformed into a bright, energetic space where each boy can carve out a corner of his own. A bunk bed offers the two younger boys their own spaces, as it visually divides the area into separate zones. For the eldest, a high loft bed with a study area below creates a private nook, which can be further separated with curtains. Each child now has a dedicated desk, making the room both functional and inviting.

A simple solution for dividing a room

In a compact room shared by multiple children, thoughtful space division is essential to ensure privacy. When space is tight, ceiling-mounted curtains offer a versatile solution. They act as flexible partitions, easily drawn or opened as needed—perfect for when an older sibling wants to study in peace or stay up a bit later without disturbing others.

Enough room for everything

For storage, the designer has chosen furniture from the versatile SMÅSTAD collection, which includes spacious wardrobes that can be combined in different ways and adapted to different spaces and needs. The designer points out that the handles can be adjusted to different heights to make them easy to open for taller and shorter children. Shelves and wall space are also used in clever ways: for example, hangers can be used to provide space for bags and similar items, while perforated boards create a solution for storing smaller items.

A place for study

To create multiple study areas without cluttering the room with various pieces of furniture, the interior designer opted for a larger shared workspace with two desks placed side by side and a chair on each side. This arrangement allows both children to study or work simultaneously without interrupting each other.

Organised workspace

Keeping the workspace tidy requires convenient organizers to store essentials within reach. Shelves can hold neatly arranged folders for easy access to papers, while small bowls on the desk are perfect for organizing stationery. A rolling cart is also an excellent addition - it keeps supplies easily accessible and can be pushed aside when not in use, freeing up more workspace.

A place even for the smallest things

Nurseries often overflow with small items that can easily get misplaced, making dedicated storage essential. The SKÅDIS collection offers an ideal solution with perforated boards designed for versatile organization. These boards can be customized with various accessories, making it easy to keep track of all those tiny items. Available in different sizes, they can also be stacked together to maximize storage space.

“Furnishing a room for three children can be challenging. Bunk beds or loft beds are excellent solutions, as they free up space beneath for study areas or cozy nooks. Keep in mind, a light blanket is often enough for loft beds, as warmth naturally rises, making the upper area cozier.”
