Home idea with IKEA: a cosy living room... in a garage image 1
The makeover in the sixth episode of the show might seem simple – IKEA Interior Designers have redecorated many living rooms. But this time there's a catch. A living room in the garage! The owners, Ilze and Kaspars, say it was this space that enchanted them the most in their search for a home. They dream of a space where they can spend time with friends, offer a place for overnight guests if necessary and indulge in their hobby – music. IKEA interior designer Agita faces an unusual but exciting challenge. See what she's up to!

Before: minimalism with a personality

The former garage is elongated, but has large windows at one end, and the space is spacious and bright. A DJ console has found a place at one end of the room, showcasing one of the owners' hobbies. The rest of the décor is rather austere and the lack of a dining table around which to gather friends is immediately noticeable.

Another special feature of the room is the fireplace, which requires additional safety considerations when decorating.

After: an elegant living room with a special flair

Ilze and Kaspars' living room has a completely new look after a makeover. The dark-toned furniture stands out perfectly against the light walls and together they create a cosy, relaxed atmosphere. There is space for storage, as well as for the owners' longed-for round table. Agita chose a pull-out table to give her more space when needed, but to be compact and unobtrusive in everyday life.

A change of mood: when industrial style becomes cosy

The new living room is a great example of how a cosy space can be furnished in the seemingly austere industrial style. Here it is used in several elements, mainly in the storage solution, but also in the choice of lighting and the overall mood. The interior skilfully combines different styles, that are nevertheless intertwined in a common palette, proving that it is safe to choose what is close to our hearts, while still creating a coherent overall impression.

The soul of the living room: dining area

A comfortable dining area, where you can spend time with your family and friends, was one of the most important wishes of the owners. Agita has taken this into account and designed an elegant dining area with furniture in the timeless black colour that creates an eye-pleasing graphic contrast with the light walls, pops in the well-placed lighting to create a softly glowing surface and provides space for a variety of activities.

Multifunctionality at its finest: an extendable table

Extendable tables have long won the hearts of many homeowners as a practical solution when a small surface might be enough for everyday use, but a larger solution is often useful. This living room has found a place for just such a table. The INGATORP folding table has a round top when assembled, which gives a softer impression than a square table, but when unfolded becomes an oval that can comfortably seat more people.

Sofa bed

The owners of the house pointed out that they often have friends who stay overnight, so it was clear that they needed a solution for comfortable sleeping arrangements. Agita chose a sofa bed that looks elegant and blends in with the other furniture because of its dark tone. This sofa can be quickly converted into a comfortable sleeping solution.

Industrial stars: FJÄLLBO series

The FJÄLLBO furniture collection has been chosen for the storage of belongings in this room as a charming reminder of the living room's original function as a garage. The collection is inspired by industrial design and the furniture is made of simple, durable materials: metal and solid wood. The dark tones and clean, restrained shapes of the furniture fit perfectly in the space. The roomy shelves can hold boxes and baskets for smaller items, or just items that need to be stored.

"When decorating, it's good to take into account the immediate surroundings, the view from the window, the location of the property. If there's a forest nearby, for example, you can take inspiration from that for the decoration of the room, the colour palette and the furnishings. If the property is in the countryside, you can also use as many natural materials and textures as possible in the interior."
