Having a nicely set up terrace is an opportunity to have a small vacation moment every day, says musician and mom Māra Upmane-Holšteine. IKEA designer Rita Rimke helped her with designing the terrace of her new home – turning it from an empty corner with contrasting orange columns into a colorful and vivid place for relaxing.
Eclectic and bright style for creative family
“Maras’ house terrace has a very strong visual identity that influenced the atmosphere I wanted to go with. It is surrounded with orange colored columns which brought the idea to create more eclectic, bright look and use furniture that will be comfortable to use for whole family. Green plants, natural fabrics, colorful patterns, mix of different materials like rattan chair and powder-coated aluminum outdoor sofa, plastic chairs for kids is perfect example for catching trends,” explains the designer.

First comes space, then the interior
As main challenges of this terrace R. Rimke names its small area, rounded shape and lack of a power outlet outside: “To fit there all furniture which are necessary for creating cozy socializing area for family, I used furniture, that can be stacked and a vertical plantstand. It doesn’t take up much space, but can be used for storing decorative plants and greens as well as small boxes with childrens' toys, pencils and other things.”

To have enough light in the evening even without electricity, IKEA designer used different kind of solar-powered lamps and also lanterns with candles to create the mood.
