This time, IKEA makeover will take place in Jūrmala. A very special challenge awaits interior designer Elīna – creating a room for a teenager. The line between a boy's room and a room for a young adult is thin. A step in a wrong direction can quickly make the room too childish or too "serious". However, it is also a chance to be more daring in choosing colours and solutions.

Organisation is everything
A good place for work is essential if you want to achieve great results. The existing solution with a wide wooden table is excellent for working yet it has to be organised more in order to make a small home office/study corner for a teenager.

Biggest challenges
The room is rather on the small side and, as an attic space, it has almost no straight walls for placing standartized furniture. There is also just one window to let light in so on darker days the room gives off a kind of a subdued atmosphere. The lilac wall colour and wooden furniture do not do much to alter this impression.

Finding place for hobbies
The teenager living in this room has more than one hobby and one of the most important things for him is music. He goes to music school and plays also at home. An electric piano is at home in his room and has to stay also after the makeover.

Interior designer Elīna
IKEA interior designer Elīna says that a teenagers room is definitely not the easiest to create as all depends on the right overall impression. The interior should not seem outdated but there is also no point in going overboard with modern details as that would mean having to change everything in a couple of years already. So it has to be flexible. Multifunctionality is a must because, for a teenager, his room is the universe of his personality that has to give structure to the different aspects of life from studying and relaxing to hobbies.

The magic of division
This time, the IKEA makeover show goes bold. Vibrant colours, asymmetric wall painting and expressive, dark shades and graphic patterns that draw attention. The room has been divided into four different areas for different activities, starting in all four corners and meeting in the middle where the most of the free space is.

A cosier bed for better sleep
Sleep is important for people of all ages and especially while the body and the brain is still developing. So one should never underestimate the importance of a good sleeping place. Here, a cozy nook has been created with the help of a spatious wardrobe that closes off the space dedicated to sleeping and serves as a footboard. The open shelves under the bed provide additional storage for things that are good to have close at hand. Some of the essential items can be placed on the small bedside table.

Young & bold
The corner for relaxing invites to have some rest in the cosy lounge chair. There is a floor lamp for reading and other activities requiring more light. The graphic patterned rug harmonises with the expressive walls, giving it the right balance between the colourful and the monchrome.

More space in the right place
The new working area now looks like a home office fit for a young adult. There is enough space both for working and for storing all the necessary things. A spatious desk with a drawer unit and shelves ensure staying organised. Light colours in this part of room make the space seem lighter even without windows.

Light it up with decorative lamps
Lighting is often an underestimated feature in many spaces. When thinking about lighting a room, function goes first – you have to have a good general lighting and some additional lamps for reading and working. However, one should not forget about mood lighting as it gives personality to a room. Here, just a couple of decorative lamps help to create the right atmosphere for relaxing.

Attention to personal details
Before the makeover the owner of the room was strict about keeping just two things – his electric piano and the big cage for his two degus. Both are still there but thanks to the much lighter overall impression the cage could be put away from the window and it is now possible to enjoy daylight when playing music.
