It has always been just one room that gets to be made over in "Home Idea with IKEA". This time, the balcony seems like such an integral part of a whole entrance area/balcony duo that there is no question about whether the interiors should be matching as well. IKEA Interior Designer Renāte Vāvere is up for the task – to work her magic on this space to create a pleasant surprise for the host and a welcoming first impression for the apartment.
The temporary minimalism
Kristīne bought this apartment quite recently, only a few months ago and she has been working on the interior step-by-step and without rush, so there are still some things that once belonged to the previous owners. Kristīne confesses that the entrance area often lacks comfort, for example, when many guests arrive as there are hangers just for some coats and jackets.
Light and spacious
When compared to quite a few other apartments this one has a really spacious entrance area, whole 9 square meters. Right in front of the door there is a balcony that ensures plenty of daylight. However, Kristīne says that the dusky hours in the morning and in the afternoon would require additional lighting as the room faces North and there is no sunlight. The big wardrobe is another inheritance from the previous owners and holds clothes, shoes, ironing board and many other things.
A balcony can have its own secrets
The balcony is very small but still useful, especially as there is a little secret under the windowsill: cabinets for cleaning utensils, foods that do not fit in the kitchen cabinets or need to be stored in a cool place or other things.
A green haven
After the makeover the room surprises with fresh green shades and the light coming through the window is enhanced by the light furniture. Even the balcony has become a hue lighter as the wood has been stained, giving it a lighter shade without covering the beautifully natural surface texture. The lightest corner by the balcony now serves as a small chill-out area with comfy seats and a reading light. The wall opposite to it has a small but spacious shoe cabinet and shelves for more storage options. The personality of the host mirrors in the pictures above the armchairs and as the picture frames are placed on ledges rather than hanging on the wall, it is possible to change them as often as needed.
The feeling of a home inside and out
Even if the balcony is very small it is always possible to find some space for a small table and a chair for enjoying a nice cup of coffee or a warm summer evening. If more space is needed, the furniture can be folded and put away. A special accent is created by string lights, glowing in the dark like fireflies and creating a homey feeling.
Relaxing outside
Natural wood fits almost every interior and this goes also for outdoor spaces. A balcony is more comfortable with a table and a chair and most comfortable, if those can be put away to enjoy more space when needed!
The secret of keeping everything in order
In many homes, the balcony becomes a space where things are put to be used seldom or never and chaos is always lurking somewhere near. A nice shelf is a smart choice for organising everything from gardening tools to decorations and other stuff.
Every big dream starts out small
Deep down in their heart, many people long for their own small garden but this dream is dificult to achieve if you live in the city. A good start is a small greenhouse that will welcome your own small paradise garden and keep it safe from all draughts.
