The living room is the place to express your personality and to show your most valued possessions. The smaller the space, the more thought has to be given about which furniture to choose so the room does not look cluttered and everything has its own place.
Welcome to one of the new catalogue homes! This family of four are living light and bright, in a small one-bedroom apartment on an even smaller budget. The world beyond is big and busy, so they’ve created a home that’s cosy and calm, where tight space and limited means don’t matter.
Take simple storage, flexible dining furniture and astonishingly low prices. Stir well to mix, and you have the makings of this multigenerational family’s combined kitchen and dining space. Finished off with a sunny window bench, music corner and the aromas of something scrumptious bubbling away, it’s a space where this family finds themselves lingering... long after the plates are cleared.
They’ve been living together for the past few months but sharing life together since day one. Here they are: siblings sharing a one-bedroom apartment and making it work. More than work, actually. As they’re both about living their best lives, rather than having the most expensive stuff, they’ve created a home to be enjoyed together and apart. From dance and dinner parties to quiet “me-time” moments, it all happens here.
“I want to furnish my home sustainably, but I don’t have much money. How do I do it?” There is this idea that living more sustainably is expensive, but it absolutely does not have to be. You can furnish your home to be a beautiful, warm and colourful place in a way that is good for the planet but good for your wallet too. We chatted to interior designer Chiara Effroi Lutteri about how she created a home that’s just that: poppy, practical and filled with lower-impact choices – all on a shoestring budget.
The last episode of the season is special in more than one way. Not only is it linked to IKEA social responsibility project "Notice violence", it also presents a huge challenge for the IKEA interior designer Elīna. Her task is to freshen up a kitchen of a crisis centre and this means that the interior has to fit the many temporary inhabitants that come and go here. At the same time, it does not do to make it purely utilitarian, it has to feel like home. Elīna will show all her skill to make this happen.
When we think of shared homes, we may imagine students and young professionals, but there is no reason why people of all ages can’t enjoy a more communal way of life. With multifunctionality, smart storage and a focus on private and social spaces, this home is an exciting new take on living with others.
