Children feel special and important when they can do as the adults do. That's why we created a miniature children’s version of our beloved STRANDMON armchair. Now you can sit and relax together - side by side.

A small armchair to feel big in

Are you familiar with STRANDMON armchair? This is the children’s version, based on children's sizes, how they sit – and how they don't sit when the armchair suddenly transforms into a desert island or space rocket. Because when speaking to experts, we learned that having one's own, safe and comfortable armchair in the right size is more important than we may think.

Imagining that you are driving a car, working at the office, cooking food… "To mimic adults is a way for children to recreate the things they have experienced so that they can understand the world around them and how they fit in it," says Barbie Clarke, a child psychologist who has researched children and their development. With this insight, we wondered which armchair could be appreciated by children if the size was adapted.

Adapted for small bodies

The choice fell on STRANDMON wing chair. "It's timeless and cosy and has an immersive design, kind of like sitting in a protective hug," explains Nicolas Cortolezzi who was part of the development team. But it is not just about shrinking the size. "Children do not have the same proportions as adults and they don't sit like we do. They move around and like to put their feet up, which is why we made a fixed seat instead of having a loose cushion." The team worked with stability to make the armchair safe. Among other things, the legs where positioned differently for a centre of gravity adapted to how children use chairs. As for the fabric ─ we know the durability required when the armchair is sometimes used as a desert island or the world's highest mountain.

Making children feel accepted

All in all, it is about children being accepted and seen as the little humans they are. "If children are allowed to sit in a chair in their own size, they feel more involved in their surroundings,” says Barbie. “It really is essential for them."

Do you like STRANDMON?

STRANDMON wing chairs, sofas and foot stools are inspired by an IKEA wing chair from the 50's. But we put higher demands on our furniture today. That’s why we’ve made sure STRANDMON can take a person that sits and gets up at least 50,000 times. That’s once a day for 136 years.

A room with a personality
A room with a personality

As owner as home. The living room is the one room in a home most often seen by guests and its interior is the one to determine the first impressions of guests about the inhabitants. The living room is the place to express your personality and to show your most valued possessions. The smaller the space, the more thought has to be given about which furniture to choose so the room does not look cluttered and everything has its own place.

Work it your way
Work it your way

Take a moment to think about your home office. Give it enough thought, just like you give it the most productive hours of your day. Make it an ergonomic place of work, which inspires your daily efforts and motivates you getting out of the bed and building your bright future. Start by looking around and thinking things through – is your office just a desk in the corner of the room, or do you have an entire room? Do you want this place to be bright and filled with light or mysteriously dark? What work tools do you require? How many worktops and what kind of storage works best for you?

A bedroom and a nursery in one
A bedroom and a nursery in one

As a family grows, the bedroom often takes on the function of a nursery. It is convenient for the parents as they do not need to go far in those sleepless nights and nice for the baby as it feels safe in this small world.

“How can I make my home safe and childfriendly?” It’s important that children have a space where they can be free to play, learn and be themselves, believes interior designer Mia Gustafsson.
