The IKEA store in Helsinki, Finland, was full of customers that day back in 1997. Being a textile technologist at Children’s IKEA at the time, Carina Ingelsten ran a course about safety for a group of IKEA co-workers. ”I lifted up a teddy bear and pulled on the legs and arms to show how well they are sewn in place. When I pulled on the plastic eye, something happened that shouldn't – the eye came off”, says Carina. This was a major setback for Children's IKEA, but it was a setback that would lead to important safety improvements.
All soft toys were removed from the store as Carina tried to call her colleagues in Sweden. ”It was a Saturday, so it wasn't that easy to get a hold of people, but in the end Jörgen Svensson, my manager at Children's IKEA, answered and we succeeded in stopping global sales of our soft toys”.
Jörgen remembers the call. The fact that the eye came off despite all risk analyses and safety checks was very serious. Still, in hindsight, he still sees that it led to something really good. ”Thanks to what happened, we learned to systematize safety work even more. We established clearer procedures and areas of responsibility”.
The incident also led to the decision to not use plastic eyes at all. Embroidered eyes were not only safer, they also proved to give more character and personality to the toys. Annie Huldén, a designer who has created many soft toys over the years, agrees. ”The eyes are very important for a soft toy and plastic eyes easily seem too symmetrical and stale, while embroidered eyes are easier to vary in terms of the design, the size of pupils and the eyelashes.” Soft toys at Children's IKEA are loved by children throughout the world. It's a loved friend to play with and find comfort with - and which parents can always feel secure about.
The true beauty of home furnishing is the diversity of our customers, as well as diverse tastes and sense of style. Also the financial reach of households vary. Therefore no bedroom is alike. IKEA interior designers suggest starting furnishing by asking oneself questions. Light of dark? With a wardrobe or chests of drawers? Is the room just for sleeping? Before shopping, think through the layout of the entire room and measure it well.
Getting good sleep is important, as is learning good bedtime habits for later in life. So, don’t underestimate a setup that sets devices aside and helps you wind down – perhaps with some nice music or a good read.

Sharing a bedroom is usually easier if you give both children room for privacy and expressing their individual personalities. This way they get enough me-space to learn to appreciate the advantages of sharing: the connection and sense of security in each other’s company.
Kids get a better recharge with happy and healthy habits that make the falling-asleep part easier. A long cuddle, a warm bath, a good book or some music – all ages have their favourite ways of unwinding.
It’s a joy to see teenagers in a stimulating and creative workspace that really supports who they’re growing into. A desk to centre around, comfortable seating for hangouts with friends, good lighting for all activities and lots of smart storage.
Handling your clothes storage and getting dressed all on your own is a big part of growing up. From finding what to wear and caring for your clothes, to getting dirty clothes to the laundry and folding clean clothes again, here are some helpful tips.
It's easier to keep things tidy in the kids’ room when there's a place for everything. Good storage can even make it fun for them to stay organised all by themselves – the more so if you let them decide where each thing should go.
The way toys are stored makes a big difference in how much playtime they get. It’s simply more inspiring for kids to have them in clear sight in easy-reach storage – which also makes tidying easier. But everything doesn’t always have to be cleared away. Why not leave a few creative spaces where playtime can continue whenever they want?
Children’s ability to learn has a lot to do with – taking breaks from learning. Activating body and mind through play helps to make sessions of concentration more effective. Why not make room for both in your child’s room?
Safety in children’s rooms is everything, so your kids and their friends can play, discover and enjoy themselves without unnecessary accidents – or you having to worry about what’s going on in there. Here are some helpful steps for precaution.
